Ever heard the Devastations? Just flown under your new band radar? Some people have been paying attention. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs told Mojo magazine back in 2003, when speaking about their self-titled debut album, that it was "the best thing I've heard all year". The Dirty Three are such fans that they asked Devastations to appear at the All Tomorrow's Parties they curated in England last year. Brassland, a small US label founded by members of The National, put Devastations' first two albums out in the US. And critics seem to share the same sentiments as other bands. Pitchfork gave their last album, Coal, a 7.5 rating. Uncut gave the same record FOUR STARS. Q Magazine believes "cultdom seems assured; more may follow." Magnet has appropriately named Devastations to their class of 2007 in their annual "Who's Next" round-up. So how don't you know anything about these guys? Let us introduce you. Devastations are three guys from Melbourne, Australia via Europe (mostly Berlin but sometimes London or "L'Undone" as they say in their own unique coinage). They are Tom Carlyon (guitar, vocals), Conrad Standish (bass, vocals) and Hugo Cran (drums). Yes, U was recorded in Berlin with Jeremy Glover and mixed in NYC with Chris Coady (Blonde Redhead, TV on the Radio). It hints at spiritual predecessors like Serge Gainsbourg and the Velvet Underground but also brings to mind thornier cosmopolitans such as Suicide, Scott Walker and Yoko Ono. At heart, Yes, U is a fashionable discotheque with enough ideas to kindle the fires of the mind. Now you know!
